Vera Bradley raises over $30 million for Breast Cancer research

Overtime I’ve learned that Vera Bradley is more than just paisley prints splashed on every style of bag available. They’re a conscious brand set on living the idea of doing what we can to ensure a better tomorrow. Since 1993, they have been raising funds for Breast Cancer research in honor of their friend and co-worker, Mary Sloane. To date, the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer has raised over $30 million ($2.2 million being from this current year) to support revolutionary research conducted at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Their efforts and generosity have grown the centers researchers from only six in 1999 to over 30 today; providing the means to discoveries such as a genetic biomarker (a DNA sequence that causes disease or is associated with susceptibility to disease) that causes neuropathy (weakness, numbness, and pain from nerve damage, typically in the hands and feet) for many breast cancer patients consuming certain chemotherapy treatments.

“We began raising funds for breast cancer research in 1993 after the loss of our dear friend and co- worker, Mary Sloan,” said Barbara Bradley Baekgaard, Co-Founder of Vera Bradley. “Since then, our commitment to this cause has evolved into the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer. Together with our amazing donors, devoted event participants and selfless volunteers, we hope for a future free from breast cancer.”
