YUNA AT THE HIGHLINE BALLROOM

Needing a break from a very stressful week, I looked forward to the sounds of Malaysian-born songstress, Yuna. I didn’t know what to expect of the performance as the room at Highline Ballroom was filled with people of every fashion genre alike – the punk rocker, the corporate gentleman, the college student, the Wiz Khalifa wanna be, you name it – but once the show began I understood why we were all there.

With her bohemian style, Gele hair wrap and an original vocal style that expels a melodic equivalent of peace and love, her opening number “Lullaby” – which was anything but – grabbed your attention. Every song was a slow crescendo leading up to the musical climax of her soulful, island gems.

By the end of the night, Highline Ballroom became your safe haven as long as Yuna was there. It was that show you never wanted to end, filled with people you never wanted to leave. This may be the first time you hear of Yuna, but I promise it won’t be the last.

Album available now.
