Backstage @ Jonathan Simkhai SS’17 | Catwalk by TIGI

Hair Inspiration: Thomas Osborn, TIGI US Creative Director & VP of Education
“The idea that we’re working on today is what we call desert drifter, so it’s this girl that’s just come from the desert or a party at Coachella, however you want to talk about it. This inspiration was almost like a drier beachy wave. It’s that looseness in the wave.”

The Look:
“The nice nuance we got there’s a couple little braids that sit right behind the ear that we’ve then gone through with a bit of thread that’s coordinated with the outfit that they’re wearing, so the color palette that Jonathon’s worked with this season. We’ve also added a couple beads into it, so the embellishments that are on the dress kind of fits together with that.”

How-to:

Spray a generous amount of CATWALK by TIGI Texturising Salt Spray throughout dry hair to create a touseled, textured base. Blow-dry hair while combing through with finger in a backwards and upwards motion.

Divide hair at the nape. Wrap large sections of hair around a 1.5″ curling iron without closing the clamp, leave ends out. After each section is released gently rake through the hair with fingers to loosen the curl creating an un-done bend. Use a flat iron on random pieces for a “just walked through the desert look.”

Braid a small section of hair underneath the left ear and secure with an elastic. Measure a piece of thread that is 3 times the length of the braid. Beginning in the center of the thread at the top of the braid, wrap the thread around the braid in a criss-cross motion. Add in a large bead half-way down the braid by stringing it onto one side of the thread and tying a knot with the other. Finish with a second bead at the of the braid.

“Some of them will be slightly finer. Our girls with finer hair, obviously the braid’s going to be a little bit smaller. You don’t want to take all their hair inside of one braid. It still needs to have fullness. You’ll see it has volume to it. We’re going to see varying lengths in the girls here. We’re not adding hair for length. If we add any hair today, it’ll be more for thickness, more for fullness, but we’re working with the girls as they come in. Some of them have a little bit of a natural wave to them. We’ll work with that, get more of uniform texture. The idea is that it’s not super polished.”

Create a second braid underneath with thread without adding beads and a random surface braid loosely through the back on the opposite side.

Rube a dime-sized amount of CATWALK by TIGI Hairista Cream throughout hands and rake through hair from mid-shaft to ends. Bend strands of hair as necessary to create a rough, messy look.

“All the girls are going with center part. The idea is that it’s much looser, matte, not a whole lot of shine to it. We’re running a little bit of Harista through the ends, so it’s almost like that girl that’s been tanning in the sun with her ends of her hair kind of been soaked up by the lotion. You see a little bit of that separation? That’s it.”

Finish with CATWALK by TIGI Transforming Dry Shampoo and CATWALK by TIGI Work It Hairspray throughout to amplify texture and create grit.
